FACT: Free publicity worth thousands of dollars is essential for a restaurant and/or resort/hotel property's continued prosperity and survival.
The Practical Gourmet
® (PG) ranks the free-standing and on premise restaurants of upscale Spas, Resorts & Hotels/Properties worldwide. The 2-Star Bronze, 3-Star Silver, 4-Star Gold, and 5-Star Platinum Award Certificates awarded by The Practical Gourmet® are unique in the industry and the best kind of publicity available because:1. Our food critics do not review restaurants, they rate them to determine which award a restaurant merits. The first time our critics rate a restaurant they dine unannounced. If their findings are positive, the restaurant is nominated for one of our Awards. A second rating is announced and set up in advance. Usually our critics dine twice or three times in any given restaurant before a decision for an award is reached.
The reasons are numerousone most important is that a chef may have an off night. Or the first rating may be the equivalent of a 2´ to 3 stars, while the second dining experience rates a solid three stars. The restaurant receives the higher rating. Also, going back a second or third time may offset a previous not-up-to-par dining experience. Two to three months after being honored with an award, the restaurant receives an unannounced third visit from two to four certified food tastersnecessary to make sure the restaurant 's culinary excellence is consistent with the other two visits.
Also, they need to be certain that food service and quality are consistent. If a restaurant does not
merit an award at the time of the visitand thankfully this rarely happens, the Owner, Food & Beverage Manager, or Maitre'd receives a complete and polite explanation. Virtually,
No negative reporting or publicity ever results from PGs visits.2.
The Practical Gourmet®, through its representatives, bestows awards in person. On behalf of the restaurant, photos are taken of the executive chef, and/or restaurant owner or manager, receiving the award. It becomes a "media event" which the restaurant can use to generate free publicity.3. The prestige and publicity value of the award is enhanced and reinforced by a free listing in the
Fine Dining Guide section of PG and in separate annual editions of International and National Restaurant Guides, -i.e., a planned section, The Best Spa Resorts & Hotels Worldwide.4. News of our awards are generally picked up by other consumer food/travel & leisure -- gourmet/culinary sections in magazines, newspapers, broadcast and electronic media (UPI, and other wire services) because we accept
no advertising and are a non-profit entity serving the hospitality, restaurant, travel & tourism industries.PG's 'award ratings' are known for unbiased objectivity. Syndicated Food and Travel columnists, consumer/trade media/newsletter publishers, and International Food, Wine and Travel Writers Associations have mentioned our awards.
